The Member representing ONNA State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Sunday Johnny, on Saturday joined other critical stakeholders across Eket Federal Constituency to receive a detailed briefing from the Member representing Eket/ONNA/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Okpolupm Etteh, on his legislative and constituency achievements over the past three years.
The stakeholders’ engagement, held on March 14, 2026, at Villa Marina in Eket, brought together political leaders, elders, community representatives and opinion leaders from the four local government areas that make up the federal constituency, Eket, ONNA, Esit Eket and Ibeno.
Hon. Sunday Johnny, who was among the prominent leaders present, participated actively in the engagement alongside other stakeholders who gathered to assess the progress made through federal representation and to strengthen collaboration for continued development within the constituency.
Addressing the gathering, Rep. Okpolupm Etteh expressed deep appreciation to the stakeholders for their support and trust, describing the meeting as an important moment of accountability and collective reflection on the journey so far.
He recalled that his mandate faced months of legal contestation shortly after the election but noted that despite the challenges, his office remained committed to delivering on the mandate given to him by the people.
According to the federal lawmaker, his focus throughout the period has been to ensure that representation translates into tangible benefits for the people through legislative engagement, empowerment programmes, infrastructure projects and social interventions.
Rep. Etteh highlighted several infrastructural projects facilitated across the constituency, including the construction of classroom blocks at Nduo Eduo High School in Eket and Secondary Grammar School in Upenekang, installation of electricity transformers in communities such as Edebuk and Upenekang and the provision of motorized boreholes in ONNA and Ibeno to improve water supply.
He also noted the establishment of a modern Information and Communication Technology centre equipped with 40 computers at Odio High School to enhance digital learning and technological exposure for students in the constituency.
As part of efforts to improve public safety and promote renewable energy, Rep. Etteh disclosed that solar powered streetlights have been installed at several strategic locations including the School of Nursing in Eket, Cottage Hospital in Ibeno, Inyangetor Community in Upenekang, Secondary Grammar School in Ibeno, Ibeno Divisional Police Station, Mkpanak Clinic in Ibeno and Idung Imo Village in Eket.
In the health sector, the lawmaker outlined major interventions undertaken through medical outreach programmes. He revealed that a 12 day free medical and surgical outreach conducted in September 2024 attended to more than 8,700 residents and successfully carried out 803 surgeries while enrolling 800 vulnerable persons into the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Scheme.
He further disclosed that another outreach programme conducted in 2025 attended to over 1,500 patients, during which hundreds of surgeries and laboratory tests were carried out for residents who would otherwise have struggled to access such healthcare services.
Rep. Etteh also highlighted his efforts in facilitating employment opportunities for constituents in federal institutions, noting that several sons and daughters of the constituency have secured jobs in establishments such as the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, federal universities, the Nigeria Police Force and other federal agencies.
On youth and women empowerment, he revealed that more than 50 youths have been trained and certified in Health, Safety and Environment while another group received training in oil and gas maintenance services. Additionally, over 100 rural women were empowered through training in fish farming and snail farming to enhance economic self reliance.
The lawmaker also emphasized his commitment to education support, stating that several students have benefited from scholarship opportunities facilitated through his office at the University of Uyo and the International Institute of Journalism. He also disclosed that 1,000 JAMB examination PINs were distributed to students across the constituency to support their participation in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
Speaking on his legislative work at the Green Chamber of the National Assembly, Rep. Etteh revealed that he has sponsored two key establishment bills, the Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, Eket Bill and the Petroleum Training Institute, Ibeno Bill.
According to him, both bills have successfully passed third reading in the House of Representatives and are currently awaiting concurrence from the Senate. He noted that once established, the institutions will create new opportunities for education, employment and economic growth within Akwa Ibom State.
Rep. Etteh also listed several motions he sponsored at the National Assembly aimed at addressing issues affecting the constituency. These include motions on shoreline erosion in Ibeno, flooding in ONNA communities, abandoned Niger Delta Development Commission projects and the reactivation of NTA Channel 35 in Eket.
Following the presentation, stakeholders at the meeting, including Hon. Sunday Johnny, commended Rep. Etteh for the detailed briefing and for maintaining engagement with community leaders on the progress of his representation.
The presence and participation of Hon. Sunday Johnny at the meeting further underscored the importance of synergy between representatives at both the state and federal levels in driving sustainable development and addressing the needs of the people of Eket Federal Constituency.
The engagement concluded with renewed calls for unity among stakeholders and continued collaboration to advance development across Eket, ONNA, Esit Eket and Ibeno local government areas.
