Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, as part of activities to commemorate his third anniversary in office, has commissioned three road projects while also flagging-off some other major roads within the Uyo metropolis.

The roads commissioned included the Youth Avenue at Mbiabong Etoi, the 1.4km Concrete Hotel Road and the 1.2km Radio Nigeria, Atlantic FM access roads at Nsukara Offot.

While commissioning the projects, Gov Emmanuel noted that his administration was committed to ensuring infrastructural expansion of the state.

Speaking at Youth Avenue, the Governor informed the people who turned out in large numbers that he was moved by the poor state of the road in October during his visit to a church thanksgiving service and had promised to deliver the road for the people, adding that the road is a fulfilment of his promise to open up communities for development in the state.

Gov Emmanuel further stated that his administration had executed more than 30 roads in Uyo local government, stressing that it would be practically impossible to go round to commission all the roads, but the few he can commission will represent the entire network of roads executed so far by his government.

At the Concrete Hotel road, the Governor noted that it might be difficult for people to remember the former condition of the road before his intervention, and assured that his government was following a blueprint of ensuring that the state was conducive for development to thrive.

He said that the poor condition of the Atlantic FM access road almost rendered the radio station and the surrounding villages nearly inaccessible especially during the rainy season and that prompted the state government intervention.

In his words, “When we visited here for a live radio programme sometimes ago, before I got to the main road, it took me almost double the driving time between Government House and the main road before getting to Atlantic FM. I assured the General Manager that I will not come back to Atlantic FM if we do not have one of the highest grades of roads that will lead into this premises. I think this is my second time here and I’m coming to commission the road I promised.”

Gov Emmanuel hinted that the road will also come with some beautifications, saying that the landscaping and line up of trees, would create a particular kind of ambience that will give residents a sense of relaxation.

The Governor gave kudos to the contractors for maintaining the highest standards as directed, which he said, would take more than 10-15 years before any maintenance can be required on the projects, thanking the youths and members of the communities for their cooperation with the contractors to ensure the speedy execution of the roads.

The Commissioner for Works, Akparawa Ephraim Inyang-Eyen, explained that the 1.2km normal standard, 7.3 meters wide with dual drainage system, is an alternative entry route into Shelter Afrique Estate, and also takes care of evacuation of flood water from the area, and is executed to the best standards of two side drains and is 7.3meters wide.

In their separate remarks, the Village Head of the Youth Avenue Community, Chief Eyo Asuquo Essien, and the Vice Chairman of Uyo Local Government, Mr Udeme Emmanuel, appreciated the Governor for keeping his promise, and pledged to support him to remain in office for eight uninterrupted years to do more for their people.

Also in their remarks, the member representing Uyo State Constituency at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon Monday Eyo, and the Village Head of Nsukara Offot, Eteidung Sunday Asuquo Offiong, assured the Governor of the continuous solidarity and support of their people.

In the same vein, the Governor also inspected the ongoing Uyo-Etinan Road, which according to him, will be ready for commissioning during the state anniversary in September, while also flagging-off the Ring Road 3, hinting that Ring Road 2 is more than 70% completion and work has started on Ring Road 3.

Gov Emmanuel was accompanied by his Wife, Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel; Deputy Governor, Mr Moses Ekpo; Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem; State PDP Chairman, Obong Paul Ekpo; Chairman of the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA), Hon. Enobong Uwah; federal and state lawmakers, and some executive council members.
