205 TEACHERS SANCTIONED BY AKSG FOR LATENESS, ABSENTEEISM FROM DUTY POST

A total of 205 teachers in public schools (primary and secondary schools) in Onna and Eket are facing disciplinary measures for various offences ranging from lateness to work and absenteeism from duty post without permission.

The sanction was announced, Wednesday when the Education Monitoring Team from the Governor’s Office, led by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Education Monitoring, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet visited Government Secondary School, Afaha-Eket, Girls High School, Ikot Ibiok, Eket, Commercial Development Agency School, Iko Eket, Community Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Akpan Eshiet, Onna and Qua-Iboe Group School, Awa-Iman, Onna.

At Govt Secondary School, Afaha-Eket with a staff strength 119, only 13 attended the morning school assembly and co-ordinated the activities of students.

The sledge hammer fell on 79 teachers (Permanent teachers, Corp members, N power staff) whose sanction takes effect within the next 24 hours for either lateness or being completely absent from school.

At Girls High School, Ikot Ibiok, the team was impressed about the serene and calm school environment, as classes were on. The school has a staff strength of 36 permanent teachers, 56 Corp members and 22 N-power Staff.

Out of 36 permanent teachers, 30 were present in school. Twenty teachers reported to school early, while 10 reported late. 6 were absent from school.
14 out of 56 corps members posted to the school were present in school. 42 Corp members were absent. 16 were absent from school. 6 out of 22 N Power Staff reported at their duty post

At Community Development Agency School with a total number of 33 permanent teachers, 22 N power staff and 24 Corp members, only 24 reported to school early while 3 reported late. 3 teachers were absent on permission while 3 were absent without permission.

Out of 22 N power staff, 3 reported to school early and 7 reported late. 12 N power staff were absent from school.

Out of 24 Corp members, 1 reported to school early and 1 reported late. 22 Corp members were absent from school.

At Commercial Development Agency Iko Eket, a total of 48 teachers (permanent teachers, N power staff and Corp members) are to be sanctioned within 24 hours for either lateness or being completely absent from school.

At Community Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Akpan Eshiet, Onna LGA, the team was not impressed about the conduct of teachers.

The school has a staff strength of 24 permanent teachers, 7 N power staff, 14 Corp members.

As judged with the time books, out of 7 N power staff, 4 were present in school and 3 were absent.

Out of 24 permanent teachers, 15 were present in school.
However, the Principal, Mr. Udoeyen Akpan Sunday was asked by the monitoring team to query himself for not closing the time book at 8.00am, a development which makes teachers sign earlier than they arrived.

Out of 14 Corp members, only one was present in school.

A total of 27 teachers (permanent teachers, Corp members, N power staff) are to be queried within 24 hours for either reporting to school late or being completely absent from school.

At Qua Iboe Group School, Awa Iman, Onna LGA, the school has a staff strength of 12 (11 permanent teachers and 1 N power staff).

11 teachers were present in school, except one, who was absent on permission.

Members of the Education monitoring team were impressed that teachers manned all classes to engage the students.

The team was accompanied by a Director in the Ministry of Education, Barr. Theresa Attih, and the Akwa Ibom State Chairman of National Parents, Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), Elder Ime O. Ataideh, among others.
