A factional Publicity Secretary of the All Progressive Congress in Akwa Ibom State, Barr. Edet Bassey was embarrassed and thrown out by the of the ruling Party in Abuja last week for imposition, fraud and impersonation.
In a meeting of State Publicity Secretaries of the Party held at Newton Park Hotel in Abuja, Barr. Edet Bassey had turned up and presented himself as the spokesman of the Party in Akwa Ibom State.
The recognized Publicity Secretary of the Party in Akwa Ibom, Samuel Udobong was also billed to attend. When organizers of the meeting sighted Barr. Edet Bassey, they approached him and sought to know who he was. He introduced himself as the Publicity Secretary of APC in Akwa Ibom State.
This introduction by Barr. Edet really annoyed the National APC who pointedly told him that he is an imposter and impersonator. He was immediately ordered to leave the conference to avoid unpleasant consequences.
Initially, Barr. Edet Bassey wanted to prove stubborn; his stubborn attitude infuriated the leadership of APC at the National level, who invited security operatives that bundled him (Barr. Edet Bassey) out of the venue. It took the intervention of some kind hearted individuals who begged that Edet Bassey should not be arrested and detained in police cell cum custody.
It was learnt that the All Progressive Congress, APC under the aegis of Conference of APC State Publicity Secretaries, held a two days workshop on external communicators and social media organized by International Republican Institute at Newton Park Hotel, Abuja.
When contacted on why Barr. Edet Bassey was thrown out of the conference; the South-South chairman of the Forum Mr. Fortune Panebi said the group does not recognize any Barr. Edet Bassey as APC spokesman in Akwa Ibom but Samuel Udobong.
He said Udobong is the only elected spokesman of APC in Akwa Ibom and can only be removed through Party Congress.
APC leadership at the national level however warned Edet Bassey to stop parading himself as the spokesman of the Party in Akwa Ibom or risk arrest and prosecution in a competent court of law.
Meanwhile, it is very likely that Barr. Edet Bassey may quit the APC if he is not being appeased by the Party in the state for the embarrassment he suffered in Abuja. Those close to him said ever since that ugly incidence happened that the embattled Oronian have not been in his elements.
It was further learnt that when Edet Bassey was sacked from the conference, he hanged on in Abuja in an undisclosed location. The event however ended weekend.
The nationally recognized Publicity Secretary of APC in Akwa Ibom, Samuel Udobong said the conference was interesting and will help participants advance their scope of work in Party image making. He said, he was pleased to have been a part of it and added that participants learnt a lot at the conference.
However, with the position of the Party on the APC spokesmanship of the Party in the state, stakeholders believe that the APC will spare Akwa Ibomites the embarrassment of multiple publicity secretaries of their Party.
